- Matthew 5:12
- "Great is your reward in heaven"
- Problem:
- This passage is understood by Evangelicals and Pentecostals to teach that the righteous go to heaven at death, or are rewarded later in heaven.
- Solution:
- If the reward is in heaven, then there are two possibilities:
- The righteous go to heaven to obtain it.
- The reward comes from heaven to the righteous (here on earth).
- The following passages are conclusive - the reward comes to the righteous:
- The reward is "reserved in heaven" (1 Peter 1:4) "and when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away." (1 Pet. 5:4).
- "For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works." (Matt. 16:27).
- See also 1 John 5:11 cf. Col. 3:2-4 and Rev. 22:12.
